What is Art Therapy?

Art therapy is a form of psychotherapy that uses the creative process of making art to improve someone's  mental and emotional well-being. This creative process can help people to resolve issues as well as develop and manage their behaviours and feelings, reduce stress, and improve self-esteem and awareness.

I am an experienced art therapist, having worked in CAMHS and local and national charities for over ten years. I have always loved art, the soothing qualities it offers but also the power it has to express the things that words cannot. I like introducing people to this way of art making or encouraging them to find their own ways of working and using art to suit their needs.

My aim is to offer a safe, confidential, creative space, to work with clients to help them to better understand their thoughts, feelings and experiences in order to improve their sense of wellbeing, confidence and relationships.

Clients

In weekly one to one therapy sessions, the clients are supported in exploring their thoughts, feelings and experiences using art materials, story making, puppets, drama, sand, objects and talking. The work can be short or long term work.

Clients produce images or stories which can help them to increase their understanding of themselves and their situations. This therapy doesn’t depend on words and can therefore be helpful to someone who finds it difficult to express their thoughts and feelings by talking.

Clients

Clients can be any age from four years old to adult or the parents of a child or teenager. The reasons for attending therapy vary which means the number of sessions they may need will also vary. Clients don’t need to feel like they are skilled at art making to attend.

Common issues that clients explore are;

Abuse, emotional trauma, bereavement, sexual abuse, self harm, domestic violence, anxiety, anger, stress, panic attacks, self esteem or confidence issues and dissociation.

Difficulties at work or school

Clients I work with:

Any age from four to adult. Looked after children or adults who have experienced the care system. I also work with students who are attending therapy to support their learning, private clients as well as clients funded by organisations.
